Final Review Daisy Hook

After much anticipation Daisy Hook has brought us yet another thriller and it’s a thrilling as ever... Since her last appearance on our screens as the director and actress of koi, we’ve been waiting with bated breath for her second instalment hoping it will be in as tip top condition as last time. Since her last project daisy has decided to go solo, so hopefully she will still bring the enchantment and fun of her last film with her. Well, she’s back. And she’s back with a bang!

In a “lesser of two evils” situation, VIVID follows a young girl in her mundane routine, taking her pills every morning (appearing to be the catalyst for), being bombarded by the very un-ordinary. The Film brings up issues of drugs, mental health and imagination.

From the bare blank face of Clara we can assume that this is not the first time this has happened to her. In reality after speaking to the director this has been her life. Day after day. Drug after drug. Hallucination after hallucination. This is a usual happening in Daisy’s films; she takes the unordinary and makes it ordinary and tolerable.

This film brings together clever camera work, intelligent and first-hand accounts of how drugs can change, this film really gives you a sense of empathy for the Clara.

The film altogether has the feel of the thriller genre but as you will see the film lulls you into a false sense of security, for as the film goes on it gets darker and darker until…. Well I’ll let you find out.

Final Evaluation - Daisy Hook

1- In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

A. For our main media product we were instructed to make a five minute film of any genre we choose. Our group chose to work on a comedy thriller. This is what we came up with...

From what we have seen over the past 2 years we decided we were more comfortable with the thriller genre, partly because we had done so much work on it in the first year.

Narrative

the film narrative is very straight forward and follows a daily structure which we signified through the use of titles throughout the film. This narrative type is called linear. we decided to do this to show the routine-ness of her life. Rather than having a circular narrative where you would see the character dead at the start and then switch to Monday and continue the cycle until she died again.

  • For a most of the scenes we used the the technique of the shit reverse shot, you can see this in frames 1-3 and frames 8 & 9. for this method of filming we filmed the whole scene from one perspective, once cut was called we moved the camera and redid the scene again, this could often take some time but we felt it gave the most realistic feel to the scene.
  • The films narrative is restricted, you know as much as the woman who its happening to. we did this so the audience would not know what is coming next. although as the week goes on some people did work out that something would happen to her everyday as she took her pills.
  • This makes our film easy to follow so the audience can concentrate on the story rather than getting confused by complicated narrative and structures.

Themes And Issues

  • We addressed the issue of drugs in this film, but not the recreational type prescription drugs and the effect they can have on people. which we have never really witnessed in a short film before, so we were rather on our own in terms of conventions. IN the filmed we aimed not to make fun of this issue whilst still trying to make it a comedy.
  • We aimed to in keep with the main conventions of a thriller. Which i feel we followed rather well.

Mise En Scene

Mise en scene is key in a film to portray the story of the film and to evoke certain emotions you want audiences to have during certain parts of the film. The aspects of mise en scene are:
  • Costume
  • Make-up
  • Facial Expressions & Body Language
  • Props
  • Lighting
Costume.
Costume was a tricky one for us, because we were showing a weekly routine we had to shoot the same scenes a number of times but with different costume, this takes place in the morning routine shots.

Make up
Make up was important for us in the scenes where blood was used. rather than using the conventional fake blood recipes using corn syrup, we opted for the "home made" DIY type, or melted lipstick...

Facial expression and body language
Body language and facial expressions can say a lot in a film, A LOT! Which was essential for us because we had no talking in our film. we wanted to play with the audiences natural reaction and having the character react unusually to what is happening will enhance that.
The scene when the character has blood running out her eye is a good example, if this happened to me i know i would be running down to the hospital but she just looks at it, wipes it away and carries on. although she looks worried and shocked its no where relatable to the extreme reaction anyone else would have. this could suggest that this has happened before.

Another scene where this can come into focus is Tuesdays meal. It starts off as another routine set of shots but then it changes from beans on toast to brains on toast. Now a normal person would freak out at this sudden change in meal, and if unless I'm mistaken most people would be repulsed at the idea of brains on toast, but again she just shrugs it off, adds pepper and continues with her lunch.

This is the kind of thing we wanted to have fun with and play with because it really gets a reaction out of people whether they laugh or recoil in disgust its good to get a reaction.

2.

3. What Have You Learnt From Audience Feedback?

The target audience was in the range of 15- 35 as i thought that this film would appeal to this age more, with the fact that its in some cases quite repulsing at times i thought anyone younger than this might not be suitable to show it to. from all the people I've show it to i think this age range definitely had the best reaction to it in terms of appreciating the story, where as i showed it to my father (50) and....he didn't really understand it all...

From the audience feedback I've received I've learnt that whilst some people understand the story and narrative whilst others slightly misinterpret it a little.

As you can see Ben Judge pretty much got the jist of the film whilst a little off key, and Kristian pretty much got it spot on.

But from the answers i did get... One thing was clear. No one at all picked up on why Friday was important. Friday was the day that she broke her routine and didn't take her pills therefore something bad happened to her for real. In hind sight i think i would have made a bigger deal about the fact that she didn't take her pills, or show the fact that she had ran out of pills would be more impacting.

Poster.

The main thing with the poster was a sort of over arching thing that was a point to make about hte whole film. Vivid. No one understood why it was called vivid. people appreciated the fact that it was an original name but couldn't really tell me why it should be called that.

I talked to my teacher and he suggested i change it to side effects (seeing as it was used in the tag line) which i agreed with, and so did everyone else. When i asked people if i should rename it to Side Effects most people lent back and had a moment of realization of what the film was actually about.

so in after thought the two things i would change would be 1. To make more of a statement about the lack of taking pills on Friday. And 2. Change the name from Vivid to Side Effects.

Final Poster For Vivid

The different posters for Vivid

This was the First draft for our poster

this was originally meant to be our final poster but the feedback we got from it was
mostly negative, people didn't really understand what the film was about and the
visual aesthetic wasn't really liked overall.

This is our final poster. This is the one that went down the best with everyone we asked, they got
what the film was about and they really liked how it looked.

Poster Analasys - Daisy Hook

The poster for Shutter Island lets us know that its a thriller in many different ways.
The first way that it does this is through the use of the weather. We can only see that its raining, and other than that we can only see that its very dark, this tells us the mood of the film through pathetic fallacy showing that its going to be a dark film.
The island itself is a collage of a number of photos, giving us an idea perhaps that the film is about piecing together the evidence or completing a puzzle.
The main block of text is kept away from the main image and is kept to the middle alignment.
The main part of the text that our eye is drawn to is the title not only because its the biggest font but because its a vivid red colour, the font also looks like it has been stamped, this could give us an idea about the location, ie places that use red stamps, hospitals, drop in centres Ect.

The colour palette used in this poster is very synonymous with fantasy horrors, a variety of shades of blue and brown, most of them being darker shades. this gives us a clue that the storyline will also be dark in its theme.
Even though the title isn't in a striking colour its still the thing that our eye is drawn to because of its placement. The title also ties in with the setting with the R of the title leading off into a branch.
the main image is of a little girl (who is the main character) walking in to the split trunk of a tree. We are meant to veiw the girl as being vulnerable and innocent, which is very juxtaposed to the setting, being very old and ominous.
All of the main text is placed in negative space apart from the tag line which is placed over an image of the moon, which can tell us that the majority of this film will be set at night.

We can tell this film is probably going to be a comedy from the words saying "from the director of The Mighty Boosh" which was a very wacky comedy.
The poster its self is very colourful we can guess that the film is going to be colourful as well. The poster also has marks on it for instance over the U of Bunny is a coffee mug stain, as if its been used for a place mat or forgotten which you wouldn't really see with other film posters but in itself is quite quirky considering that posters are meant to be kept pristine and clean so this tells us that the film its self is going to be rather quirky in its nature.
The poster is split up into 3 sections, the main image, the title and pictures of the supporting actors. the production block is situated underneath the supporting actors images along with all the other production details.

First Day of Filming

Today was rather successful talked about how we were going to film the scenes. We weren't able to film the walking the dog scene because of weather conditions but we managed to get the ending filmed as well as the brushing teeth scene. We also managed to get a couple of transition shots filmed.

Notes

We're not really looking at any particular genre or theme at this point we are more considering what is within our reach in terms of making the short film in terms of our resources and actors available.

First we are assigning roles based upon our individual strong points

So Reece will handle more of the editing and blog as he is better with the IT side of things as has a strange aversion to filming but happy to do as much as he can from his computer and comfy chair.

Daisy and George will handle more of the filming side of things in place of Reece, as both enjoy filming a lot more and are not as capable with IT and are not as familiar with the macs as Reece is.
Daisy and George also do subjects within the drama department so will have better access to some actors from the drama department. These people also should be better actors than if we did it ourselves or sourced random people as they should enjoy acting more and have a better understanding or body language and facial expressions.

A film like the short film 2:20 is a great  for ideas
This film is a great short film to derive ideas for us as it doesn't really have anything that would be out of our reach as it just has a great use of camera shots and editing techniques.
I believe we should take this approach when trying to construct our film, keep it simple yet quirky but we do have to consider that our film will be about 3 minutes longer and this quite a lot of  time to fill with a short film as most I have seen while researching are less than 4 or they go on a lot longer and can span over 8 mins.

Location

WE HAVE MORE PROBLEMS

All of our actors fell through at the last minute, so we are going to have to step up and be in the film ourselves. Filming starts this Friday at Daisy's house. We will film all the vital scenes including the opening, dog walk, bathroom and ending two. Tonight I will film ending one with the bunk beds. When both are done we will compare the two and choose the best one to use in the final film.
Daisy's house was not available at the beginning so we have had to try and find a suitable place to film. After trying Daisy's grandma's, my house, my friends house and the college we finally were able to use Daisy's place. This has been a problem over the past week but now it has been resolved we cam get all the filming we need done.
Scheduling a time we are all free has been a major issue. Our timetables at home and college are so hectic it has been difficult finding a time where we are all free. We finally came to an arrangement so we can all go to Daisy's house at the same time. We were going to try and film the scenes separately but we all work better in a team.

Synopsis

The build up to Halloween is a spooky time for everyone, but Clara has every reason to be worried. Clara is a girl who has a rather vivid imagination, which unfortunately links in with her love of all things horror.

AS she goes through her day to day life things take a turn for the worse, simple games of hide and seek turn into running away from a murderer, dinner time becomes rather cannibalistic and a few uninvited guests appear when they really shouldn't. Clara's older sister Daisy is taking care of her whilst their parents are away on holiday. so its up to Daisy to keep Clara safe. But as Clara believes she has escaped the worst, things that go bump in the night aren't necessarily in her imagination.
